Typography resources

Below, you can find a few resources to learn more about typography.

Professional Web Typography by Donny Truong
Specific to web type; includes some technical-leaning material about code.

Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton
A book with a good overview of the history and use of typography; a lot of pictures of examples.

A very detailed cannon of typography; this one is not good for beginners but designers consider it to be the Bible of type style

The elements of design

Here is a nice overview (with supplementary links) of the elements of design. As you start designing your second site, think about these elements separately and assess how well you're controlling them to convey the message to the user.

  • Line
  • Color
  • Shape
  • Space (negative)
  • Texture
  • Typography

The article also talks about the principles of design layout that you can use when combining the elements above. These come in helpful as you try to control how the viewer progresses through your page design.

  • Scale
  • Hierarchy (dominance and emphasis)
  • Balance (symmetry)
  • Harmony (elements feel like they belong together)
